The McKeags of Coleraine started trading in Abbey Street in 1897 as purveyors of fine foods and groceries. Our original premises shows the reflection in the window of the stone building which stands on the corner of The Diamond today – an architectural landmark.
The boy on the left, Bertie McKeag, moved away from the traditional family concern to open a Pharmacy Store on Railway Road, Coleraine.
Moving to our more recent history…. Louise McKeag (nee) Sherrard having qualified with an honours degree in Optometry from Aston University, Birmingham, opened her first premises in 1991.
Tragedy struck when Coleraine town centre was the target of a serious bomb attack, decimating the shopping area and enveloping the McKeag premises in fire.
Recovering from this tragedy and inspired by the dawn of a new millennium an exciting fresh chapter started for the McKeag legacy.
Louise McKeag re-opened, embracing the changes and challenges of a new century with the launch of a purpose built property.
With recognition comes success and the business won the prestigious “Design Practice of the Year” category at the Optician Eyecare Awards. Louise was presented with her prize by English Cricket legend David Gower at a gala dinner and ceremony in the Hilton Hotel, London.
This national UK award recognised the sensitivity and creativity of the business design, particularly with respect to access for individuals with disability and visual impairment.
Louise McKeag Opticians reinventing itself again – chic, modern and cutting edge. Building on the wisdom of 24 years experience in the world of Optometry, we have proudly and enthusiastically embraced extensive updated technology and design. Having travelled widely, Louise has taken her global experiences, and after being inspired by Parisian design and style, has redeveloped her own unique brand and profile in the form of the newly refurbished property in Coleraine town centre.
AND YOU CAN BE ASSURED THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE STORY, ONLY THE CONTINUATION OF A JOURNEY…
